It is a matter of great pleasure for ULCCS, the 93-year-old Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society to receive first ESAF social business award instituted by ESAF society. Moreover, it is a privilege for us to receive this award from Prof Muhammad Yunus, a veteran personality in the field of micro finance. Over the years, lot of transformations had taken place across the world. I consider the emergence of ULCCS in North Malabar as one of the beginnings which paved way for transforming thousands of families, living under poverty to gain better livelihood status through appropriate interventions in their work culture. ULCCS could pay way for facilitating employment to more than eight thousand unemployed youth.
ULCCS was started during 1925 with the blessings if Shri. Vagbatanandha, who could implement an era of renaissance in North Malabar and during pre-British era, poverty was the major problem affecting millions of rural families with the objective of poverty eradication. ULCCS was established to promote appropriate work in construction and infrastructure. Over the years, lot of changes are taking place across the world in education and career sector. Services sector started super seeding, primary agriculture sector and secondary industrial sectors. Taking the account of changes taking place across the world. ULCCS gradually diversified into different sectors, which includes UL Technology Solutions to promote software development, established UL Cyber Park under Special Economic Zone, established Sargaalaya Craft Village to promote tourism, UL Foundation envisages care of children with special needs and senior citizens and recently formed UL Education, facilitates education, skill development, entrepreneurship and employability in different sectors.
During the last nine decades, society could achieve spectacular growth because of its sincerity, commitment and truthfulness. ULCCS started with a humble beginning with a capital of 37 Paisa by 14 people in a rural village called Karakkad of Vadakara Taluk. Over the years the spectacular growth and diversification paved way for an annual turnover of Rs 700 Crores. UL Foundation of ULCCS addresses needs of children, poor, aged and also those living below the poverty line. Society involved in converting Five Govt. schools as centre of excellences through appropriate interventions in teaching and learning ecosystem. Society is the total solution provider for construction, infrastructure, IT, IT enabled services etc. in the state. ULCCS identifies the skill gap as one of the areas which affects the employability of the students. Taking in to an account of reducing the skill gap, ULCCS is involved in implementing appropriate skill development programs across the state through establishing Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction at Chavara, UL Skill Academy under DDU-GKY at Vadakara and National Skill Park in Calicut district. Society is involved in the upliftment of the society which includes adoption of a Grama Panchayath namely Nochad in Kozhikode district for Integrated Agriculture Development projects, day-care centre for senior citizens namely Madithattu, school for children with special needs, then skilling programs for children with disabilities etc. These are some of the few projects ULCCS is implementing among thousands of projects. ULCCS is working with UNDP, ICA, Skill Institutions, British Council, Cambridge English & Universities abroad along with state and central Govt. projects.
Once again I thank ESAF society for selecting ULCCS for the first Social Business Award. I dedicate this award for the welfare of millions of workers who spend major part of their livelihood in construction and infrastructure for building a developed nation.
